Modulbeschreibung

Erweiterungskurs Wirtschaftskommunikation Spanisch (A. Just-Quiles)

International Studies I (H.-W. Schaumann)

International Studies II: Active Research Methods (B. Davenport)

This course will focus on topics ranging from healthcare in America and in Europe, to collegiate sports and their impact on professional sports, to research based on the economics principles. Furthermore, we will examine and discover facts and statistics through readings, learn methods and theories, practice interview skills as well as have group discussions. If it is within the boundaries of our class, we will also have a fieldtrip to the WHO in Bonn and give you a chance to participate in several interview processes related to our subject matter.

This is a hands-on class, meaning that students will be asked to do a lot of work outside the scope of our lessons. You will also be responsible for giving a group presentation on an agreed upon topic. At the end of the term students will:

  • have a broader perspective on international relations.
  • have performed interviews with specialists and those with a first-hand knowledge in their respective fields. A short presentation will also be mandatory.
  • be able to formulate hypotheses and sound assessments within the range of our topics.
  • become more familiar with the World Health Organization (WHO) and their findings.
  • engage in debates and present international facts and statistics.

European Studies (H.-W. Schaumann)

Intercultural Communication (Dr. L. Borgmann / S. Schmid)

The focus of this course will be on interactive teaching methods in order to give students the chance to learn about the theory of intercultural communication and put their newly acquired knowledge into practice in concrete simulations and case studies. Theory and practice will be interlaced and students will have to take an active part in role plays and discussions.

International Business Simulations (Dr. L. Borgmann)

The main aim is to set up a simulated company to market a service internationally and thus apply business communication to a realistic setting. The design of a „virtual company” is aimed at providing students with business communication skills in multicultural settings. The course will improve the students’ cross-cultural awareness and communicative abilities. The simulation also facilitates the development of the students‘ logistics skills, IT skills, presentation skills and team work ability. The service that the company might offer could be connected to event management and how to help institutions such as universities to organise international events professionally.

TOEFL-Vorbereitungskurs (J.A. Faulstich)

The course mainly focuses on the needs of students who need to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL®). It aims to introduce students to the basic structure of the test and show them ways of preparing for this situation. Special emphasis will be placed on the grammatical skills required for the successful completion of the "Structure and Written Expression" section of the test.

Students are trained to perceive cultural differences and act accordingly. The intercultural competence gained is both “culture-general” and “culture-specific”. Theoretical insights into different working styles, different perceptions of time, different religions, and different education styles are applied in exercises and in concrete simulations involving active interaction with participants from other cultures. Students acquire the ability to master difficult intercultural communications problems such as arise in international Business.

International Business Simulations

On this course students will set up a simulated company to market a service (e.g. event management) and carry out commercial transactions with companies, institutions or individuals in different countries. The international business environment will enable the participants to learn about the workings of a company as well as to practice dealing with international suppliers and customers in a near-realistic situation. The students will

  1. present the virtual company to prospective business partners (making their company and their service known, holding a press conference or designing an advertisement)
  2. write and receive inquiries, offers and orders and deal with financial and transportation matters and adjustments.
  3. carry out the logistic planning of the transactions and optimise the process

TOEFL Preparation Course

The contents are adjusted to the students’ individual needs. Integrated practice for the Listening and the Reading sections of the test is supplemented with skillbuilding exercises on specific problems tested in the TOEFL ® – such as inversion, noun clauses, adjective clauses, prepositional phrases, tenses, conditional clauses, causatives, parallel structures, transitive and intransitive verbs, impersonal expressions of importance etc. This course is not suitable for students at beginner’s level.
