Course Unit Description "Basics of Process Optimization (AL 13.04)"

Objectives

  1. To provide a basic understanding of the value and use of quantitative methods in administrative and operational problem solving and decision-making.
  2. To develop an understanding of a variety of statistical and quantitative techniques applicable to a wide range of business situations.
  3. To recognize particular techniques and their applications so as to be able to apply these techniques in problem solving for management decision making.
  4. To develop hands-on experiences with computer technology such as MS Excel (as well as Excel Add-ins) for model development and solution analysis.

Contents of the Course

Upon the successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the role of quantitative methods in business decision making.
  2. Analyze decision-making problems electronically.
  3. Develop linear programming (LP) models and solve them using MS Excel.
  4. Create sensitivity analysis on linear programming model parameters.
  5. Solve integer-programming problems.
  6. Develop solutions for transportation, transshipment, and assignment problems.
  7. Apply appropriate methods (CPM, PERT, LP) to project management.
  8. Understand regression analysis and determine the best regression model.
  9. Apply the most appropriate forecasting method for the properties of the available data.
  10. Develop simulation models and interpret simulation results.
  11. Use technology and information resources to research issues in Management Science
  12. Communicate issues in Management Science

Methods

  • Regular attendance plays a vital role in succeeding in this class. You are re-sponsible for all notes, assignments, and information disseminated in class, with or without an excused absence.
  • Participation in class discussion is expected. This involves voluntary input.
  • Only timely, TYPED homework assignments will be accepted.

Prerequisites

Formal: Full-time student (B.A.) in the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences.

Academic: Recommendation: Specialization in Logistics and E-Business.

Assessment

Aufgrund der aktuellen Lage und den damit verbundenen gesundheitlichen Risiken besteht seitens der Hochschule auch kurzfristig die Möglichkeit, die Leistungserbringung (Prüfungsform) im SoSe 2020 zu ändern und damit den Gegebenheiten anzupassen.

Bewertung

Voraussetzung für die Vergabe von ECTS-Punkten ist das Bestehen der Prüfungsleistung für das Gesamtmodul. Die Prüfungsleistung für diese Kurseinheit geht zu einem Viertel (für AL13.1) bzw. zur Hälfte (für AL13.2) in die Prüfungsleistung für das Gesamtmodul ein.
